No justice for Jeff Skilling despite sentence reduction

Former Enron CEO Jeff Skilling will be back in court next week to be resentenced. The hearing will put an end to a 9 year saga of court cases, appeals and re-appeals, one the U.S. Department of Justice will be glad to see the end of.

And rightly so. The resources and money spent by Justice to convict Skilling and keep him behind bars has been extraordinary. The deal however they have struck with Skilling and his lawyers is ludicrous.

Skilling should not have ten years shaved off his 24 year sentence. The remainder of his sentence should be quashed. Instead he has to accept the resentencing deal. He has spent years and plenty of cash, resources and angst in trying to prove he was wrongfully convicted. As his lawyer says there comes a time when he needs some "certainty," and some "finality."

The twenty four years in the first place was a rediculous sentence. In the second place the conviction was not attained in the ordinary course of justice, it was a political statement. Skilling and Lay became the public scapegoats for the systematic fraud at Enron, neither of whom were the perpetrators or the beneficiaries.

What is very disturbing is that during Skilling's trial, prosecutors concealed evidence helpful to the defence. ...
